Power Steering Pump Rebuild
Introduction[edit]
This guide describes how to rebuild your power steering pump instead of paying ~$400 for a new one.
This is easy to do, and quite alot of fun!
What You Need[edit]
- 14mm spanner
- flat bladed screw drivers
- a couple of little picks
- 15/16 socket
- circlip pliers
- 19mm socket and spanner
- shop press/vice
- hammer

Procedure[edit]
Rip the pump out of the car, and hold it in a vice. Undo the 4 14mm bolts on the back of it:
Pull the back off it and the oil pump housing might come with it. Mine did, sometimes they stick to the back, sometimes they dont.
Remove the gasket.
Remove the pump gears and vanes. They should stick together, but dont drop them!
Inside is a valve spring looking thing, rip it out:
Remove the big seal inside:
Pull the o-ring off the shaft in the middle, it sits on the bottom groove:
Hold the pulley in a vice and undo it with a 19mm spanner. Pulley should just come off.
Remove the circlip holding the bearing in with the circlip pliers.
Press the shaft out from the inside in a press.
Press the bearing off the shaft.
Press the new bearing onto the shaft:
Lever the old seal out of the pump housing:
Grease the inside of the new seal up with Hi temp bearing grease then tap the new seal in with a 19mm socket.
You can hit the shaft with the bearing on with a 15/16 socket and hammer quite easily.
Whack the circlip in the housing, kit has a new one in it:
Whack the pulley back on and tighten:
Put the new big seal in the outside edge:
Put the little seal in the centre shaft, around the bottom lip:
Sit the valve spring in.
Sit the pump gears back in the housing, watch the vanes dont fall out.
Make sure that if you do drop the vanes, you put them back in properly, or your pump will destroy itself.
Basically, they look like this:
The rounded edge NEEDS to go to the outside of the vane holder. MUST MUST MUST. Otherwise don't expect the pump to last very long...
Line the two guide pins in the holes:
Sit the oil pump outer housing inside:
Whack the new gasket in:
Put the back housing in with the bolts and tighten!
On the inlet pipe on the pump, there is another o-ring to replace:
And you're done!!!!
