Differential - Resealing

From R31 Skyline Club Wiki

This guide is for people who want help replacing the gasket or having to reseal the Diff.

You need.

  • 1X Diff gasket $4-$5 depending on where you go. Mine cost me $4.60 and the Code was FAL-021 and brand was ACL
  • 1x Gasket sealent $5-$10 again depending on where you go.

To replace the gasket you have to undo all of the bolts holding the back plate on. They are 1/2 Inch (sorry forgot how many bolts).

Then when you have the back plate off, clean the outer edge clean of any left over oil or any dirt.

Next push the middle out of the gasket.

Next on one side of the gasket apply the gasket sealent. It says a thin layer, I used a little more just to make sure it's sealed, excess can be wiped away, then place on the cleaned back plate. Allow 10-15mins to air dry.

After it's allowed to dry, apply another coat to the other side of the gasket, but this time don't allow it to dry, due to you wanting it to seal with the diff itself, just let it air dry for about 1-5Mins.

Once you have applied the sealant, put the back plate back in place. Watch out while putting it back not to let it touch anything because you don't want any sealant coming off or dragging dirt in there. Once back in place put all bolts back in hand tight to allow your hands to become free again so you can finish doing them up with the rachet, making sure they are done up tight excess sealant will come out, just wipe away with a rag. Allow a while for it to dry before putting diff oil back in so it gives the sealant time to dry tight. Cause you don't want it to leak again because you probably have to start over again.

If you want any help just ask and I'll help as much as I can.

Other Sealants[edit]

Another good sealant is available through Holden spare parts. it is known as "Holdenwise" sealant and is typically used as a thread sealant. It is about the consistency and colour of honey and a single tin of it lasts for ages. I use it on almost everything... OK, just looked at my tin and they have changed the name it is now "Holden sealant 3835215" my local parts place is run by a Ford nut and even he reckons it is great. - blue

I used fire proof silicone lol - it works great. - Rednisr31
