Automatic Transmission[edit]
The R31 Series 1 & 2 vehicles use a 4N71B transmission in the Pintara range, and an E4N71B in the Skyline range. Both transmissions are made by Jatco, and are similar in construction and operation to the L4N71B and E4N71B transmission used in other models; however, they do differ in their features and control methods.
Fitted to the Skyline, the E4N71B is fitted with a lock-up torque converter. A lock-up control unit, mounted under the passenger front seat, controls the operation of torque converter lock-up in 3rd and 4th gears, overdrive selection and changes the transmission shift pattern from an economy mode to a power shift mode.
For the R31 Series 3 Skyline range, the Jatco RE4R01A full electronically controlled 4 speed automatic gearbox was used, which also features a torque converter lock-up clutch. A transmission control unit (TCU) is located under the passengers seat, and while it retains the 'powershift' mode of previous models, torque converter clutch lockup is only used in 4th gear.

Fitted to the Pintara, the 4N71B has no lock-up torque converter. A kickdown control unit, mounted under the passenger front seat, can over-ride manual kickdown and controls the overdrive (4th gear) function under certain operating conditions.
