Windscreen -Replacement
Its time to replace my windsceeen for a few reasons
- Leaking (common problem with R31 apparently)
- Stone chips
- RAA Insurance gives you an excess free windscreeen every year so might as well use it
To get to windscreen, fairly simple
- The first section chrome window frames on the LHS and RHS need to be removed.
- This is removed by opening the front passenger and drivers doors and then removing the screws from inside window frame (near seal) with philips head.
- Next remove the main screw at the bottom of the window frame which goes into a piece of plastic.
- Then gently slide the first section away from the middle section.
- The wipers need to be removed next. These are simply undone by removing a bolt and then pulling the wiper blade out.
- Open the bonnet and remove screws around the bottom section at the base of the windscreen.
- The top strip next needs to be removed and this is done by carefully pulling it out clip by clip. There are 6 clips which are plastic so make sure you dont break them.
What not to do - pull the rubber strip out between the metal and the glass at the top. I did this to find the leak. It was held in by double sided tape to the body and window silicone to the glass. This had not been done correctly previously as silicone is not normally used

That rubber strip will set you back $100 to get a replacement from Nissan as I found out. I'm getting a different replacement strip from Windscreens O'Brien for free with the new windscreen. But it will not have the metal insert in there any more because its a different sort (black rubber)
Anyway I needed to remove that strip anyhow because I had rust all the way underneath causing the leaking
Using a drill and a grinding bit, gradually remove all possible surface rust until bare metal is exposed
Use rust converter to convert the remaining rust into a white powder
After that I used Antirust coat around the edges of the windscreen as can be seen in the pic.
Two coats of this are required and then the windscreen guy comes back tomorrow

Update on the windscreen - got home tonight after they did it... The black plastic strip they used instead of the rubber/chrome metal strips looks good New windscreens have a tinted band along the top The side window frames have a piece of rubber insert which goes along the side and up. these were cut short by the guy and missing the top piece. There is a small piece which curves around the top and is glued in that is now missing. They said if i take it in I can get a longer piece The bottom plastic part of the window frame screws in, this is only glued to the bottom frame and is broken again other than that all is good
